Big Act To Follow

Ok, check it out, there are peeps on the net calling Call of Duty World at War the top action game right now.  All I gotta say is, fine, I still think COD4 is better.  COD4's not new though, so maybe it's not a fair comparisson.  So let's look at what else is out there block buster wise.  I can think of a few that came out in roughly the same time frame.  Gears of War 2, Mercenaries 2, Battlefield Bad Company, and a host of other shooters.  I can say, out of what I can put in the same category of COD WAW (first person shooters), I'd have to say in all fairness, yes, it's the Top Action Game.

What Makes it Fun

Ofcourse it's a combination of things.  It starts with the awesome COD physics and gameplay.  The graphics are awesome.  One thing I especially like is that it's got that retro feel.  The use of bright colors on things like unit badges gave it a great retro feel.  I like the era correct weaponry, but the sound effects left me wanting something a little more robust.  At times I felt like I was shooting an airsoft gun or a fully auto-matic .22.

The Zombie Level

Beat the game and you can access a zombie gametype.  Unlocking Nazi zombies allows you to play with other people online against hordes of Nazi zombies, how cool is that?  Best weapon to use here, I'd say a pistol and you always got your trusty knife!

Gears of War 2 Now On Sale

Gears of War 2 is out, and for the past weekend or so, I've been applying the GhostGrip in steady 4 hour doses to keep my hands dry as the online play for Gears is ridicoulous.  Initial thoughts, wow, I really am impressed with the pre-game lobby.  They've basically taken the best of pre-game lobbies and combined them into one.  On top of that, you can practice by yourself or with friends by setting up a match with bots.  This will allow you and your friends to work on your technique and strategy on different maps.

 Horde Mode Yo

Nice.  Also, in the new Horde mode, you can just have the game send you a steady supply of enemies to dispatch.  Now, that all sounds wonderful, so here's the bad, stinking grenades on walls... absolutely flawed and uncalled for.  #1. it's almost impossible to see the things when you're running around trying to find someone to shoot at.  #2.  Just the very way that they work is encouraging overuse and abuse by wussies.  Those two things combined do not make for very good game play.  Till next time,,, keep your hands dry.

Deja vu all over again

Yeah, I know, I talk a lot about Gears of War, incidentally someone has tried to point out that GOW = God of War and GEOW = Gears of War.  Whatever man, save it.  So I had a chance to take a brief sniff at Mercs2 and I gotta say,,, it's pretty decent so far.  It moves along good, the game play is good, AI is well balanced, kinda looks like Far Cry, or reminded me of it.  However, for a second when I was playing it, I thought I was experiencing deja vu.

Mansion?

When you get to the twin staircase level, it's just like the inside of Mansion on Gears.  I don't know why this is, but it seems to be a trend that's happening.  Games are starting to "bite" on other games.  Just like when rap started surging in popularity,,, don't bite my rhymes.  Personally, I think it sucks and I hope game developers will knock it off.  I don't want to be engaged in a game and then have a familiar scene pop up from another title, only slightly tweaked, it's deflating and destracting.  I had to shut her down last night at that level and throw in Gears and chainsaw some fools.  Now I'm back in Gears mode thanks to that scene from Mercs2, hopefully I can bring myself back to Mercs2 and give it a second chance.  I gotta say thanks to Mercs2 though, because I haven't ran some GOW in a while, and I'll be damned if chainsawing locustesess isn't as fun as ever, can't wait for GOW2.

 Gears breaking new ground?

For some of you, I may be preaching to the choire, you may know other titles that have proceeded my experience in this matter.  To me, when Gears of War came out, the cover, peak around the corner, etc, came from a great game.  Syphon Filter, to me, was the first game to actually capitalize on this type of game play on the Playstation.

For you that have not played the original on PS1, do it, if you have access to one, Syphon Filter 1 and it's sequal are games worth playing.  For many of you Gears of War was your first experience taking cover and firing around corners, but for many others, we can remeniss this type of game play (although it may have been perpitrated by previous titles) Syphon Filter was actually the first game, in my opinion, to actually have the AI and the character interactions succeed at the same time, in a harmonious fashion.

Laying the groundwork

Laying the road for block busters like GOW.  So when you're ducking behind a burnt car and blindfiring at some fool, pay homanage to one of the greatest games on PS1 ever made.  I can't wait for GOW2, look forward to chainsawing some chumps.  Look forward to me blogging on some other great PS1 games, like Medevil, Fable, and let's not forget, Tenchu, dude,,,, are you kidding me?  Yes, the PS came out with the shizzzooohhh back in the day, hope they can pull their head out of their a$$ and come up with some stuff that'll make me fork out half a G to buy a PS3, untill next time,, see you on Xbox Live.
